Welcome to the Teacher Education Program in Adolescent Social Studies. We dedicate ourselves to preparing teacher candidates who become highly skilled and effective professionals. The Master of Arts in Adolescent Social Studies, offered in collaboration with the History Department, is a master's degree program that prepares candidates to become effective teachers in today's challenging classrooms. Through course work and field experiences, our program equips teachers with the knowledge and skills to support and assess student learning, and uses case studies and digital video analysis to ensure effective modeling of real world teaching practices. Our program is registered with the New York State Education Department and leads to New York State certification.
We also offer an advanced certificate program in Social Studies that leads to initial certification. This program is designed to meet the needs of teacher candidates who already have a master's degree in history but need education courses to become certified. The education coursework in the advanced certificate program is identical to that in the master's degree program. There are no graduate courses in history in the advanced certificate program.
