Field and Clinical Experiences
The programs in Adolescent Education provide teacher candidates with multiple opportunities to work with students and teachers in New York City public schools There are three courses in the program with fieldwork requirements: SEDF 704 Adolescent Development, SEDF 705 Educational Psychology, and SEDC 725: Methods 2: Intensive Study of Teaching Diverse Learners in Social Studies.
Each of these courses has a 36-hour fieldwork requirement that is fulfilled by spending one morning a week in a New York City public secondary school over the course of the semester. Some course assignments are connected to the fieldwork. All fieldwork placements are assigned by Hunter College. In the fieldwork connected with SEDF 704 and SEDF 705 students observe classes, and work with students individually and in small groups. Students are exposed to classes in all the adolescent subjects. In SEDC 725, the fieldwork is subject-specific and teacher candidates do their fieldwork in secondary social studies classes.
The culminating clinical experience for the program is student teaching. In student teaching, teacher candidates are assigned to a cooperating teacher in their subject at a New York City public secondary school. They work full-time Monday through Friday for the entire school day under the guidance of their cooperating teacher. Student teachers usually take major responsibility for one of the classes assigned to that teacher. Student teachers are observed four times over the course of the semester by a Hunter field supervisor. Student teachers also register for a student teaching seminar that meets weekly.
Some adolescent education graduate students take a year of practicum in lieu of student teaching. To qualify for practicum, students must be teaching social studies in grades 7-12 and must be teaching full-time in a school that does not require certification or working as a certified social studies teacher with an internship certificate. Practicum students register for a weekly seminar and are observed twice during each practicum semester.
