The Hunter College Masters Degree Programs in Early Childhood Education focus on preparing teachers for schools and programs in New York City and other urban school districts within the State. Teacher candidates are prepared to teach children between birth and age eight in public, private or independent schools and programs in the City or State. Program 1 (36-42 credits) is designed for candidates who have no initial certification or prior coursework in Education while Program 2 is for teacher candidates who have initial certification in a different area, such as Childhood Education  (grades 1-6), Special Education or TESOL. Program 2 (30-35 credits) meets the academic requirements for Professional or Permanent Certification.  Both programs gained national recognition by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Our programs are carefully planned to offer career changers and non-traditional students the opportunity to study with us in the late afternoon and evenings, as well as on weekends in the regular semester. Student teaching, however, takes place during the school day. Winter and summer courses are offered each year. In either of the programs (for certified or uncertified teachers) it is possible to study part-time or full-time. Part time is considered fewer than 12 credits per semester and full-time12 credits per semester.
