Welcome to the Teacher Education Program in Music PreK-12. This master’s degree program, registered with the New York State Education Department, leads to New York State certification as a PreK-12 music teacher. Students entering this graduate level program have already worked hard as undergraduates to develop their musical talent and skills. As part of their work in our program, students will learn about educational theory and practice and acquire specific content knowledge and skills that will help them to become effective music teachers. The Music PreK-12 program also emphasizes classroom management skills that are especially vital to music teachers who often work with large performing groups as well as classes of a more traditional size. We will provide many opportunities for you to develop, practice, and refine your teaching skills, both as part of our coursework and, ultimately, during your student teaching experiences. Graduates of the Hunter College teacher education program in Music PreK-12 bring superior teaching skills, materials, and strategies to their classrooms and have received positive observations and ratings from their school supervisors. For the past seven years, we have successfully placed all of our graduating students in full-time positions as school music teachers in New York City and the surrounding suburbs.
