Field and Clinical Experiences
Students in the Advanced Certificate Program (TVI) complete a total of 50 hours in field experiences within specific courses and 12 weeks of student teaching for one semester (three full days a week) or six weeks (five full days a week) during summer with two different age groups. Students who are employed in an approved field site with learners with visual impairments may use their jobs as practicum. We are fortunate to be located in New York City where we have access to some of the best educational programs for learners with visual impairments. Teacher candidates receive intensive supervision by experienced college practicum supervisors and cooperating teachers. A student teaching/ practicum seminar integrates the field experiences with additional theory and practical application.
Coursework with Field Experience Requirements
Fieldwork hours serve three main purposes:
They provide teacher candidates with an opportunity to observe learners who are blind or visually impaired.
They allow teacher candidates to determine whether they are really comfortable with this low incidence population and helps them to reflect on the appropriateness of their choice of entering this teaching specialization.
They provide a way for teacher candidates to link theory and practice in individual courses and test their own developing ideas, with guidance from the professors teaching the courses.
