Prospective Graduate Students Overview
Because education is in our roots. Hunter was the City’s first teacher training program, founded 1870, and to this day we carry on a proud tradition of achievement and commitment to preparing teachers, counselors and administrators in over 40 specializations who make a difference in the lives of children, adolescents and consumers in communities throughout New York City and beyond.
Our graduates succeed. On average, 90 percent of our graduates are employed within a year of graduation. And their report cards are stellar: Employer surveys show that Hunter grads are ranked highly in the most vital areas of teaching, counseling and administration, with 100 percent of those surveyed noting that our graduates excel at “creating a healthy and safe learning environment” and “advocating for fair and equitable treatment of students/clients.”
We are technological pioneers. The School of Education is at the forefront of national efforts to improve the preparation of teachers through the use of technology. With Hunter’s groundbreaking Frankfort Digital Video Project: Analysis of Teaching, our students record video of their student teaching/practicum experiences and review them with field supervisors and faculty to analyze how they applied what they learned in our classrooms to the real classrooms in the field.
Hunter stands out. The new National Council on Teacher Quality review of teacher preparation programs, published by U.S. News & World Report, indicates that the Hunter College School of Education offers the greatest breadth of quality across programs in the country. According to the review, Hunter is “the only institution that has three highly rated programs." Our faculty have outstanding expertise and national recognition in multiple fields, with major grants for research in such diverse fields as education technology, bilingual education, and vision rehabilitation.
Just ask our alumni. In the most recent survey, our graduates gave us a 92 percent satisfaction rating, praising Hunter for its “diversity of teaching strategies”; professors who were “well-informed,” “engaging, helpful and excited to be sharing what they know”; and for “being taught how to respect different cultures from my own. I was taught to keep learning.”
