How To Apply - Graduate Studies

Applications

Deadlines

  • March 15 for Fall admission (February 1 School Counseling and Mental Health Counseling;  February 15 Dance PreK-12)
  • October 15 for Spring admission (School Counseling, Mental Health Counseling, Educational Psychology, Dance PreK-12, and Childhood Math/Science do not accept Spring applications)

    International applicants (those who have completed 60 credits or more outside the United States):

  • February 1 for Fall admission
  • September 15 for Spring admission

Who is an International Student? 

  • Those who completed the majority of their undergraduate studies outside the U.S.

  • Prospective students who are US citizens or residents, but completed 60 or more credits of undergraduate studies in/at a foreign country must apply as an international student.

     

TOEFL 

If your undergraduate education was completed in a country where English was not the native language, then you must take the TOEFL. This applies even if you earned a master’s in a country where English is the native language. You cannot substitute any other test or experience for the TOEFL exam. Hunter College does not waive the TOEFL under any circumstance.

International applicants to the School of Education must present minimum TOEFL scores of:

  • 575 on the paper-administered test, or
  • 233 on the computer-administered test, or
  • 68 (less speaking component) on the IBT TOEFL.

The TESOL program requires higher TOEFL scores than the minimum requirement. Please check the Program Requirement for more information.

TWE and TSE

Applicants to the School of Education must present TWE and TSE as part of the TOEFL. The minimum TWE score is 4.5 or 22 on the IBT Writing Section; the minimum TSE score is 4.5 or 23 on the IBT Speaking Section. (The TESOL program requires higher TOEFL scores than the minimum requirement; please check the Program Requirements for more information.)

Application Checklist

Once you have chosen the program to which you would like to apply, you will need the following:

  • A completed application for graduate admission. Applications can be completed online at: http://ww5.hunter.cuny.edu/graduateadmissions/applying
  • A Statement of Purpose (500 words)
  • Official transcripts in sealed envelopes from each postsecondary school attended
  • Two letters of recommendation (if a student has been out of school for some time, professional references are acceptable)
  • A check or money order for the $125 application fee made payable to Hunter College
  • A copy of your teacher certification, if applicable
  • Official TOEFL scores for applicants whose undergraduate education was conducted in a language other than English

Non-Matriculation

The School of Education does NOT offer courses on a non-matriculated basis. Students must apply to a specific program in order to take courses in the School of Education. Occasionally, students who apply for matriculation with GPAs slightly below Hunter’s cutoff may be invited to begin as a non-matriculated students. However, this decision is based on the application presented as part of the official admissions review and is subject to the availability of resources.
