Certification
Overview
Teachers in Teacher U's program in Childhood Education are eligible to be recommended for a Transitional B certificate in Childhood Grades 1-6.
Teachers in Teacher U's program in Childhood and Middle Childhood Generalist are eligible to be recommended for a Transitional B certificate in Childhood Grades 1-6 or Middle Childhood Generalist Grades 5-9, depending on their teaching assignment.
Teachers in Teacher U's special education program are eligible to be recommended for a Transitional B certificate in Students with Disabilities Grades 1-6 or Students with Disabilities Generalist Grades 5-9, depending on their teaching assignment.
Transitional B certificates are valid for up to three years and allow individuals to serve as full time teachers while enrolled in an alternative certification program.
Upon graduation, teachers in the Childhood program will be able to apply for their initial (for those with fewer than 3 years of teaching experience) or professional (for those with 3 or more years of experience) certification in Childhood Grades 1-6.
Teachers in the Childhood/Middle Childhood Generalist program will be able to apply for intial or professional certification in both Childhood Grades 1-6 and Middle Childhood Generalist Grades 5-9.
Teachers in the special education program will be able to apply for four initial or professional certificates: Childhood Grades 1-6; Students with Disabilities Grades 1-6; Middle Childhood Generalist Grades 5-9; and Students with Disabilities Generalist Grades 5-9 .
Timeline
June and July:
- Register with TEACH, New York State's online certification system at: http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/teach (see instructions below).
- If you have not yet passed your exam requirements for the program, register for the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE): LAST and CST Multi-Subject. Registration for these exams can be completed online at http://www.nystce.nesinc.com.
- If you have already been fingerprinted by the NYC Department of Education, you will need to submit the OSPRA 104 form in order to forward your clearance to the state.
- Complete the Child Abuse and Violence Prevention and School Violence Prevention and Intervention workshops.
August:
- Receipt of scores for those who took the LAST and/or CST exams in July.
- Follow instructions to apply online for your Transitional B certificate (see below).
To Be Completed Before Your Last Semester of Coursework:
- Take the Elementary Assessment of Teaching Skills- Written (ATS-W) and the CST-Students with Disabilities (for those in the special education program only).
- Apply online for Intial or Professional (for those with at least 3 years of full-time paid teaching experience) certification.
