Dr. Jeffrey T.
Parsons, Ph.D., Developmental Psychology, University of Houston, is
Professor of Psychology
at Hunter College, City University of New York (CUNY); Professor,
Social-Personality
Subprogram and Health
Psychology Concentration, The Graduate Center
(CUNY); and the Director of the Hunter College Center
for HIV/AIDS Educational Studies and Training (CHEST).
His research focuses on the intersection between sexual risk behaviors
and substance use as they affect issues related to HIV/AIDS. He is
currently the Principal Investigator of three federally-funded research
projects: 1) Project PLUS, a National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and
Alcoholism (NIAAA)-funded randomized clinical trial of an intervention
using Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
(CBT) to improve medication adherence and reduce alcohol use among
HIV seropositive (HIV+) men and women; 2) The PARTY Project, a National
Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-funded formative qualitative and quantitative
longitudinal study of the contextual aspects of club drug use among
heterosexual and homosexual young adults (ages 18-25); and 3) The
Young Men’s Study, a NIDA-funded intervention trial to promote
behavior change with young gay and bisexual men regarding their club
drug use and risky sexual behaviors. He is also a Co-Investigator
with colleagues at New York State Psychiatric Institute on studies
focusing on methamphetamine use among gay men. Dr. Parsons is President
of the Eastern Region of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality
(SSSS) and Vice President of the Society for the Advancement of Sexual
Health (SASH). He is a member of the Committee on Psychology and AIDS
(COPA) of the American Psychological Association; of the Adolescent
Medicine Leadership Group and of the Behavioral Leadership Group for
the multi-site Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV/AIDS Interventions;
and of the International Association of Motivational Interviewing
Trainers (IAMIT). Dr. Parsons provides MI training to HIV clinics,
to medical and psychosocial providers, and to other individuals incorporating
MI into their clinical work, and serves as a consultant on a number
of grant-funded studies using MI to promote HIV-related behavior change.
