The
Hunter College Center for Community and Urban Health is dedicated to strengthening
the capacity of individuals, families, organizations and populations
to address and resolve contemporary community and urban health issues
and concerns. We believe that health is physical, mental, emotional
and social well-being, and that the health conditions that impact
communities or urban areas are often multiple and interrelated. We
define communities by a common location, affiliation or experience,
and recognize that urban public health issues often go beyond metropolitan
boundaries.
The Center conducts
scientifically-informed, interdisciplinary research and evaluation,
program development, training and education, technical assistance
and consultation, and policy advisement. We subscribe in all aspects
of our work to best practice and cultural competency principles, and
to the highest ethical standards. We believe that solutions to public
health problems are best achieved by employing the collective wisdom
of our clients, their communities, and our professions through collaborations
and partnerships.
The Center is
part of the Schools of the Health Professions of Hunter College, City
University of New York (CUNY), one of the oldest and most diverse
public university systems in the United States. The Schools of the
Health Professions includes the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing
and the School of Health Sciences, which together train public health
specialists and many other health professionals. We draw on scholars
and practitioners from the Schools of the Health Professions and from
throughout CUNY, and take pride in fostering the careers of future
leaders in public health.
