Clinical Practicum

A major strength of the Communication Sciences Program is the integration of academic learning with clinical practice. The Hunter College Center for Communication Disorders is a practicum site for students in the MS Program in Speech Language Pathology and the CUNY Au.D. Program.

All students are required to spend at least one semester in closely supervised practicum in the program's on-campus clinical practicum training site, the Hunter College Center for Communication Disorders. Upon recommendation of the academic and clinical faculty, and, maintaining a minimum 3.0 per semester cumulative average in the COMSC program, advanced clinical training is offered in a variety of affiliated metropolitan New York externship facilities.

These include settings at medical, developmental and rehabilitation centers, community agencies, and public and private schools. Assignments are made to meet New York State criteria for students electing to apply for the New York State Teacher for Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD) credential after graduation.

Externship facilities are located throughout the five boroughs of New York City, Long Island, Westchester and Northern New Jersey.

All students are provided with a broad variety of clinical training to meet the ASHA certification requirements of 400 hours of supervised clinical practicum experience with a wide array of communication and swallowing disorders in culturally and linguistically diverse preschool, school age and adult populations. This includes 25 hours of clinical observation.

CUNY Clinical Doctoral Program in Audiology (CUNY Au.D.)

The Center provides a host of  Audiology services which includes complete audiological evaluations, audiologic rehabilitation, electrophysiologic assessments, and the dispensing of hearing aids.  The clinic has sound-treated test suites, state of the art behavioral audiologic test equipment, acoustic immittance measurement equipment, otoacoustic emissions equipment, auditory electrophysiology measurement systems, and hearing-aid dispensaries including digital amplification technology and assistive listening devices.

As a clinical training facility for graduate students the Center adheres to nationally accredited standards set by the Council on Academic Accreditation.  All services are provided under the direct supervision of audiologists licensed by the New York State Department of Education and certified by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).

All students are provided with a broad array of clinical experiences to meet the ASHA certification requirements.   Following three semesters of campus based clinical practicum students are placed in three different externships and then are placed in a 12-month Audiology Residency that is equivalent to a minimum of 12 months of full-time supervised clinical practicum.
