Nutrition Club "Tip-of-the-Month"

Transfats

What is tranfats?

Transfatty acids are found in prepared foods containing partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. Examples of such items are cookies, crackers, and other baked goods, commercially fried foods, and some margarines.

Why should it be avoided?

Transfats increase the "bad" cholesterol, LDL, and reduce the "good" cholesterol, HDL, which may contribute to heart disease.

What do I eat instead?

  • Snack:
  • Fresh fruit (eg: apple, orange, banana, pear, peach, grapes)
  • Berries (eg: blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, cherries)
  • Veggies (eg: baby carrots, cherry tomatoes)
  • Raisins
  • Figs
  • Dates
  • Unsalted nuts (cashew, almonds, pistachio, walnuts, Macedonia, brazil, hazel)
  • Non-fat/low-fat yogurt

Hot food:

  • Baked/cooked potatoes instead of french fries
  • Boiled instead of fried food

On my sandwich:

  • Transfat-free margarine

When can I start making these changes?

  • Today!
