Nursing students
participating in the BEST Program receive a range of support services
designed to ease their transition into the major, boost their academic
performance, and increase the rate of student retention in the program.
All BEST Program students receive individual and group tutoring assistance,
mentoring, counseling, and advising on issues affecting their career
goals and academic performance. They also take part in workshops focusing
on skill development for academic success. Based on federal eligibility
guidelines, some participating students receive scholarship or stipend
support to defray the cost of their studies.
The
BEST Program sponsors a number of activities that are open to all
students at the School of Nursing. For example, the BEST Program sponsors
additional review sessions for the Clinical Nursing sequence of courses
(310/410). A lecture series featuring current faculty and guest speakers
occurs throughout the year and is open to all students. BEST Program
tutors are also available on a limited basis to assist non-program
students in their nursing studies.
