Admissions Requirements (non-RD track)
Students must have completed a minimum of 18 credits of science and mathematics prior to matriculation. The following undergraduate course prerequisites, or their equivalents are advised.

  • NFS 131: Introductory food science (3 credits)*

  • NFS 141: Introductory nutrition (3 credits)*

  • BIOL 120: Anatomy & physiology with lab (4.5 credits)

  • CHE 100-101: General chemistry with lab (4.5 credits)

  • STAT 113: Statistics (3 credits)

Plus, at least one year of work or experience related to nutrition, public health, social services or community organization

*The requirements for this course may be met by taking a challenge exam.

Admissions Requirements for the RD (registered dietitian) track
The following undergraduate course prerequisites, or their equivalent, with an earned grade of B or above, are required before acceptance into the program leading to the MPH and eligibility to sit for the registration exam in order to become credentialed as a registered dietitian (RD). These prerequisites adhere to the ADA requirements for those wishing to pursue the path to become an RD and/or recognized in New York State as a certified dietitian/nutritionist (CDN).

* Introductory food science (1 semester)
* Introductory nutrition (1 semester)
* Anatomy and physiology with lab (1-2 semesters)
* Microbiology with lab (1 semester)
* General chemistry with lab (1 semester)
* Organic chemistry with lab (1 semester)
* Nutritional biochemistry
* Statistics course (graduate or undergraduate)

At least one year of work or experience related to nutrition, public health, social services or community organization

Who meets the academic admissions requirements?

In general, all entrance requirement coursework has been fulfilled by anyone who is a registered dietitian; a graduate of a DPD; or a recipient of a verification statement indicating completion of all DPD competencies. One or more prerequisite courses may be needed by graduates of non-DPD nutrition programs and by credentialed professionals in medicine, nursing, and other health fields (with the MD, DO, RN, Pharm D, etc.) Up to 9 prerequisite courses may be needed by a graduate from another major who has taken little or no science.

Policy on Admission to the MPH in Public Health Nutrition
Depending on educational background, students may follow one of three routes to matriculating in the Master of Public Health degree program with a specialization in Public Health Nutrition:

Students who do not have the background to become matriculated for the MPH in Public Health Nutrition may apply for matriculation in the specialization leading to the MPH in Community Health Education, and follow either (a) or (b) below:

(a) Take up to 18 credits of MPH core Public Health (PH) courses while fulfilling the undergraduate level science and Nutrition requirements, and then transfer into nutrition.

(b) Take elective courses in public health nutrition, including fieldwork in public health nutrition placements. This path will not prepare the student to become nationally registered as a dietitian or certified in New York as a dietitian/ nutritionist.
