PH 770.14: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Diabetes Prevention

The course will explore how we can address diabetes prevention in a fundamentally more aggressive manner, with specific attention being given to gestational, pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes. The focus will be on primary prevention through good nutrition, lifestyle changes, and environmental and policy change. We will cover prevention strategies, the impact of food and culture on lifestyle behaviors, the social and behavioral causes of diabetes, and the development of public health diabetes prevention interventions. A sample of the topics covered reflects the variety of learning objectives and include Introduction to Diabetes, Culture and Diabetes Prevention, and Psychosocial Factors and Diabetes Prevention. Class activities will include a combination of didactic approaches, discussion of assigned readings and experiential learning activities. Active participation and completion of several group activities and papers is required.

PH 770.50: Topics in Public Health: Survey Development
for Health Research

Description
This is a
research methods course specifically intended to provide doctoral and select advanced
master’s students with concrete skills in development of a quantitative data
collection instrument and instruction in key issues related to implementation
of the survey in the field. In this intensive 5-day course, each student will
develop an original, pre-coded, close-ended survey and informed consent
document following standard survey design conventions. Prior to commencement of
the course, registered students must successfully complete the basic CITI human
subjects module (https://www.citiprogram.org/default.asp)
and provide the instructor with a copy of such certification.
Prerequisites
PH 700 and 703, a
minimum 3.5 GPA, and a meeting with the instructor for final permission. Open to UPH matriculated students
only.
