About:
Ph.D--Kansas State
University; MS & BS--India.
She joined Hunter in 1988 and is the Undergraduate and Second-Degree student
advisor.
Research Interests:
She is currently collaborating with researchers in the Body
Composition Unit of the Obesity
Research Center
at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital where she is looking at ethnic differences in
fat distribution patterns in children and neonates. She has also studied the effects
of food components on biochemical and metabolic regulations of lipid and
alcohol metabolism. In collaboration with researchers at the Alcohol Research
Center at the Bronx VA
Medical Center she has studied the effects of dietary supplementation with
soybean derived polyenylphosphatidylcholine on alcohol-induced fatty liver,
hyperlipemia, lipoproteins, lipoperoxides, LDL oxidation, mitochondrial injury,
and nitric oxide levels. She also encourages students to work on research
projects in the Food Science courses that she teaches wherein they employ
sensory and instrumental analysis to study the effects of fat and/or sugar
replacements on food quality. Her recent publications appear in the Journal of
Food Quality, Biochemical and
Biophysical Research Communications, Atherosclerosis, Journal of Lipid
Research, The Journal of Nutrition, Life Sciences, and Biochemical Archives. She
has co-authored chapters on “Nutritional Support in Chronic Diseases of the
Gastrointestinal Tract and the Liver” and “Nutrition and Alcoholism.”
