About:

 Ph.D--Kansas State University; MS & BS--India. She joined Hunter in 1988 and is the Undergraduate and Second-Degree student advisor. 

 

Research Interests:

She is currently collaborating with researchers in the Body Composition Unit of the Obesity Research Center at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital where she is looking at ethnic differences in fat distribution patterns in children and neonates. She has also studied the effects of food components on biochemical and metabolic regulations of lipid and alcohol metabolism. In collaboration with researchers at the Alcohol Research Center at the Bronx VA Medical Center she has studied the effects of dietary supplementation with soybean derived polyenylphosphatidylcholine on alcohol-induced fatty liver, hyperlipemia, lipoproteins, lipoperoxides, LDL oxidation, mitochondrial injury, and nitric oxide levels. She also encourages students to work on research projects in the Food Science courses that she teaches wherein they employ sensory and instrumental analysis to study the effects of fat and/or sugar replacements on food quality. Her recent publications appear in the Journal of Food Quality, Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, Atherosclerosis, Journal of Lipid Research, The Journal of Nutrition, Life Sciences, and Biochemical Archives. She has co-authored chapters on “Nutritional Support in Chronic Diseases of the Gastrointestinal Tract and the Liver” and “Nutrition and Alcoholism.”
