School Of Public Health Initiative

In October 2006, CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein announced that the City University of New York plans to open a School of Public Health at Hunter College by 2010. This proposed School of Public Health would be the first public school of public health in New York City.

The proposed School of Public Health will operate under a shared model and will be based on four campuses (Brooklyn College, Hunter College, Lehman College and the Graduate Center). It will include the public health programs at these campuses, as well as additional public health-related programs and faculty from other CUNY campuses. The proposed School of Public Health will offer graduate (masters and doctoral) degree programs and possibly selected undergraduate degree programs. The masters degree programs will include the Master of Public Health (MPH) or related degree programs (e.g., Master of Science) in the five core areas of public health: biostatistics, epidemiology, social and behavioral sciences, health care administration and policy, and environmental and occupational health. It will also include an MPH degree program in Public health Nutrition. These will be offered at Hunter College. Brooklyn and Lehman colleges will offer MPH specialization tracks in these or other areas. The Doctor of Public Health (DPH) degree program will be offered jointly by Brooklyn, Hunter and Lehman and the Graduate Center. It will include specialization tracks in four core areas listed above (excluding biostatistics).

In the coming months, CUNY and college leaders and faculty will be making decisions about curriculum, governance and allocation of resources that will determine the shape and future of the proposed School of Public Health. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting development for Hunter College, CUNY, and the City of New York.
