Our Goals

SciMON is partially funded via an Innovation through Institutional Integration ( I3) award to Hunter College from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

SciMON aims to achieve the goals of the NSF by creating a multifaceted model of institutional integration that is innovative and brand new for Hunter. The project brings together faculty and professional staff from Student Affairs, Institutional Research, Assessment, and Institutional Technology via a new administrative function in the Office of the Provost, a Science Advisory Board (SAB) and a Diversity Advisory Board (DAB), and uses new technology to create a sustainable infrastructure for Hunter's STEM enrichment programs that can accommodate growth and continuing innovation.


NSF's Goals for I3 (I-Cubed) projects

  • Increase synergy and collaboration across federally-funded projects to enhance science education within/between institutions
  • Expand and deepen impact, and enhance sustainability of science programs
  • Broaden participation, attend to transitions across critical educational junctures, and/or provide for more globally engaged workforce
  • Promote innovative programming, policies, and practices to encourage integration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) research and education
  • Encourage research on intra- or inter-institutional integration & broader impacts

I-Cubed at Hunter

Hunter's I-Cubed project is called SciMON - Science Mathematics Opportunities Network. SciMON is designed to transform the way Hunter's STEM enrichment programs are made available to students by:

  • identifying students for recruitment into the STEM programs at a much earlier time;
  • broadening participation in Hunter's STEM enrichment programs;
  • expanding the paths for information about, and application to, the programs at critical educational junctures;
  • reinventing the mentoring of students in the programs and their research placements to better integrate research and education; 
  • assessing the program's effectiveness and tracking students' progress to create an information loop that will feed back into each stage of the process from recruitment to post-baccalaureate.
