Financial Aid, Fellowships and Awards

Financial Aid
HUNTER COLLEGE - The college offers graduate tuition waivers to matriculated students in good standing based on financial need. The application should be made to the Financial Aid Office (481-4820) shortly before the registration period for the semester you wish to receive a waiver. These tuition wavers are generally awarded only once to a student and range from $100 to $400.
GUARANTEED STUDENT LOAN PROGRAM - This loan program is administered through the Financial Aid Office and must be paid back after you receive your degree or stop attending classes for a prescribed period. You must be matriculated in a graduate program to be eligible to receive a loan. Call the Financial Aid Office for more information, or navigate to their website using the drop down menu "Quicklinks" at the top of this page.

NIOSH Fellowships
UOSHERC - The Hunter College EOHS program is a part of the NY/NJ Universities Occupational Safety and Health Educational Resource Center (ERC) of NIOSH. As a member of the ERC, Hunter is provided grant money to assist students who are training to become either (1) Industrial Hygiene professionals or (2) Industrial Hygienists at Hazardous Waste Sites. Within each of these titles, there are 2 types of financial awards, both based on the students academic record; full fellowships and tuition fellowships. A full fellowship is awarded for one academic year (10 months) and pays for all tuition and fees and includes a monthly stipend. Students receiving a full fellowship are required to work part time with an EOHS faculty member and pursue the research thesis option for graduation. A tuition fellowship consists of payment of all tuition and fees and usually continues for two consecutive semesters. Both types of fellowships come with the following conditions. The student must

  • choose either part-time (6 credits per semester for 2 years) or full-time (12 credits per semester for 1 year)
  • study industrial hygiene
  • take the course EOHS 745 Hazardous Waste Management
  • be matriculated and in good standing
  • be a citizen of the US or have filed a declaration of intent (e.g. Green Card)

Tuition fellowships are awarded each semester and continue for one or two years, pending continuation of NIOSH funding. Full fellowship awards are granted in September only and continue through June.
All matriculated students having completed less than or equal to 12 credits in the EOHS program will automatically be considered for both types of awards. If you are especially interested, speak to your advisor for additional information.

Awards
A variety of awards are available to graduate students. These are distributed at the SHS graduation ceremony in either January or May and may include a monetary honorarium. All graduate students who are eligible will be considered for each award. While none of the awards require the student to apply, if you are interested contact your graduate advisor for more information. The awards are:

George J. Kupchik Memorial Award:
This award is given annually in May to a senior EOHS student who has focused primarily in Environmental Health. The award, which consists of a certificate and an honorarium, is based on academic excellence and the likelihood of making a significant impact in environmental health in the future. Dr. George J. Kupchik, who passed away in 1989, was the founder of the EOHS program and this award was established by students, faculty and colleagues to encourage continuing progress in environmental health, The award is sustained through the generous contributions from former students and colleagues.

Beatrice Konheim Graduate Scholarship in the Life Sciences:
Mr. Harvey Konheim offers two scholarships of $750 per year to an outstanding graduate student matriculated in the School of Health Sciences. The student must show evidence of outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership, professional potential, creativity and service and must have completed at least 20 credits at the School of Health Sciences.

James Felt Research Scholarship:
The James Felt family offers research scholarships for graduate students to support individual research endeavors undertaken as part of the students' graduate academic experience at the School of Health Sciences. Essentially this award goes to the most professional and significant Master's Thesis. Since only two programs at the School of Health have a thesis requirement, EOHS and Communication Health Sciences, many EOHS students have won this award in the past. Note: Thesis projects are not eligible. Awards generally average $400 and are given twice annually at the time of graduation.

James Felt Merit Award:
The James Felt family also offers scholarships to graduate students matriculated in the School of Health Sciences. There is one annual $500 Merit Scholarship for an outstanding graduate student matriculated for one or more semesters and one $500 Achievement Scholarship for an outstanding second year graduate student. Both scholarships are granted to students who have demonstrated meritorious academic and professional service accomplishments. Both awards are given once annually at the time of spring graduation. Certificates of Achievement: At the May and January graduation ceremony, the EOHS program grants several Certificates of Achievement Awards to outstanding graduating students. These awards are based on academic performance and do not have a monetary component associated with them.
