Beatrice Krauss, Ph.D.,
Social-Personality Psychology, The Graduate Center of the City University
of New York (CUNY), M.A., Clinical Psychology, University of Kansas,
is the Center’s Executive Director, the Director of Administration
and Coordination, and the Director of Collaborations and External
Relations. She oversees more than 15 research, demonstration and evaluation
projects, and is also Professor of Community Health Education in the
Hunter College Urban Public Health program. Previously, she was an
Associate Professor of Psychology and an Academic Administrator at
The College of New Rochelle, New Rochelle, New York, where she worked
on women's health issues and health promotion. In addition, she designed
programs to support women's technological and career advancement.
In 1989, Dr. Krauss became a researcher at Memorial Sloan-Kettering
Cancer Center, concentrating on psychosocial adjustment to illness,
adjustment to HIV in women and gay men, and HIV risk reduction. In
1993, she joined the National Development and Research Institutes
(NDRI), becoming the Deputy Director of the Institute for AIDS Research
and of the Center for Drug Use and HIV Research. Dr. Krauss has been
involved with more than 30 privately-, city-, state-, nationally-
or internationally-funded HIV-related research projects; she has published
and presented extensively on HIV prevention, on adjustment to HIV
in highly affected communities, on the effects of HIV stigma on people
living with HIV as well as on their caregivers and support networks,
on methodological issues in field research, and on the dissemination
of research-supported interventions. For over a decade, she has followed
375 parents and children in the Lower East Side of New York City,
evaluating long-term outcomes of interventions for parents designed
to assist them in their role as family health educators, a project
selected by NIH for HIV-prevention training for its own staff. Recently
she has looked at the multiple stresses (health, community violence,
disaster) faced by such families. Dr. Krauss has participated in NIH
reviews, chairing several special emphasis panels. In 1998, she received
the Kurt Lewin Award from the Division of Social Issues of the New
York State Psychological Association for her contribution in the area
of HIV/AIDS. She has been appointed a Fellow of the American Psychological
Association and its Health Psychology Division, effective 2006. Her
highly regarded NIMH-funded Parent/Preadolescent Training for HIV
Prevention (PATH) has been replicated in Mexico City under World AIDS
Foundation funding, in Miami under NIMH funding, and in Mumbai under
both World AIDS Foundation and NIMH funding. She has taught numerous
courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including statistics,
research design, advanced quantitative methods, tests and measurement,
computer applications in the social sciences, most core psychology
courses, and courses on health psychology, relationships, psychology
of women, stress and lifestyle, grant writing, theory and practice
of community health education, and group processes. She also serves
as a mentor to students, ranging from high-school to doctoral level,
to junior faculty, and to research staff and colleagues throughout
the nation.
