Dr. Kathleen M.
Nokes, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N., Nursing, New York University; MA, Teaching
of Nursing, Teachers College, Columbia University, is Professor of
Nursing at the Hunter-Bellevue
School of Nursing, Hunter College, City University
of New York (CUNY). Prior to coming to Hunter, Dr. Nokes was Assistant
Professor of Nursing at SUNY-Downstate Medical Center, College of
Nursing. She teaches courses in community/public health nursing, HIV/AIDS,
and nursing research. Dr. Nokes’ research focuses on symptom
management, targeting especially middle-aged and older adults with
HIV/AIDS, and she has contributed significantly to the professional
literature in this area. She was the principal investigator of “Symptom
Management with HIV Infected Older Persons,” a National
Institute of Nursing Research (NINR)-funded pilot
study testing the efficacy of a group intervention for persons with
HIV/AIDS aged 50 and older. Other areas of interest include telehealth,
especially the use of electronic health-records, and applying the
principles of service-learning to nursing education. Dr. Nokes is
the Project Director of a Barbara and Donald Jonas Family Fund-sponsored
grant, “Enhancing Student Nurse Literacy in Electronic Medical
Record Technologies,” and was the Project Director of a Helene
Fuld Health Trust-funded grant, “Implementing Service-Learning
through Building Community Partnerships.” She also has received
two training grants from the Health
Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to
support two different curriculum-related projects: 1) creation of
the nursing of persons with HIV/AIDS subspecialty in the graduate
nursing program in the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing, and 2) integration
of a clinical immersion that pairs senior-level nursing students with
public health nurses working in the New York City public school system.
During a recent sabbatical, Dr. Nokes was a Senior Scholar at the
University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa, lecturing and
conducting research in nursing and HIV/AIDS. She is also a clinical
nurse specialist, maintaining a clinical practice in HIV/AIDS in a
community-based food program in mid-Manhattan, where she provides
primary health care and education, principally health promotion and
early intervention. She is the Chairperson of the New
York Association on HIV over 50, Inc., and will
assume the Presidency of the Hunter-Bellevue Alumnae Association starting
in October 2006.
