Computer & Media Resources

Media Library

The HPEC provides a valuable library of learning resources--including the largest video collection of health-related titles within CUNY--to faculty and students at the Brookdale Campus. Students, assisted by HPEC staff, may view materials in screening rooms and multimedia study-carrels.

The HPEC is continually adding new titles to the media library, making the development of our DVD and Video collection a dynamic process.

Prior to the start of a semester, we encourage faculty to provide us a copy of their syllabi, so that we may recommend a list of complementary videos from our collection.

Listed below are sample offerings from our extensive media collection organized by subject. For a complete reference list of individual titles, please visit the HPEC in person. Users may also browse our online catalog from any computer connected to the Hunter College network.

One-Year Access to Nurse Tim Webinars

CUNY has purchased access to Nurse Tim Webinars for one year. With over 60 Live and Recorded Webinars--ranging from Teaching Strategies, Assessments and Exams, Labs and Clinicals, Curriculum and Faculty Success--this subscription is a great online resource for Faculty.

HPEC's Customized Search Engine for Health-Related Media

Still in the early beta phase, this is a customized Google engine which searches a growing list of websites known to offer video and other streaming content.

Since many educational organizations and media outlets now host full-length content online, this custom search engine aims to make it easier to find quality educational content for students, faculty, and service providers in the health professions. Our goal is to quickly and efficiently locate videos, documentaries, podcasts, lectures, interactive flash content, and other educational media. We're still refining the list of websites included in the index, so some content may not be appropriate.

Help us grow by suggesting new sites here.

Note: HPEC assumes no responsibility for the content found through this search.

Computing

HPEC works with ICIT to ensure that all classroom and lab computers at Brookdale meet or exceed the core software requirements set forth by the Hunter College Software Advisory Committee.

For Faculty

All instructor computers in Smart and Enhanced Classrooms have Microsoft Office 2007 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access), PASW statistical software, Firefox internet browser, and Adobe Reader, in addition to standard Windows XP applications (Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer, Windows Movie Maker, etc.).

On the Mezzanine, the ORGS PC lab is available for faculty and research center staff and has Microsoft Office 2007, Adobe Acrobat Pro 9, PASW, SAS, R Console, Nvivo, QDS, Adobe CS4 Master Edition (Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Final Cut Pro, Snagit, InDesign, Premier Pro, Dreamweaver, etc.), Firefox and IE internet browsers, and various media players. Resources in the ORGS lab are reserved for grant writing and research-related purposes, with additional support and consultation services available from ORGS staff.

For Students

The HPEC has computers with over 150 discipline-specific software packages. Microsoft Office is not available on these computers.

The Public PC Lab (E015) and PC Classroom (E016) contain Microsoft Office 2007, PASW, EndNote, Mathematica, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Google Earth, ArcView Geographic Information System, Firefox and IE internet browsers, and various media players (QuickTime, Windows Media Player, Real Player). Students may print in E015 using their Hunter OneCard.

Students may work on research or classroom assignments in the Health Professions Library, located on the second floor of the West Building at the Brookdale Campus, which has computer stations with Microsoft Office 2007, PASw, EndNote, and Windows Media Player. Printing is permitted using a Hunter OneCard.

Computer-Assisted Instructional Packages (CAIs)

HPEC features hundreds of health-related, computer-assisted instructional packages (CAIs), interactive video discs (IVDs), and multimedia CD-ROMs. Our staff work closely with students in the use of these resources, especially in preparation for licensing or certification exams. For a complete list of CAIs and to track your progress, download our CAI Score Booklet (PDF).

Computer Reservation Policy

HPEC maintains a PC lab on the west Mezzanine of the Brookdale Campus for the use of instructional software and other media. Computers are available to students by appointment, though walk-ins are also accepted based on availability. A school or other photo ID is required to use HPEC media resources.

Students must also adhere to CUNY Policy on Acceptable Use of Computer Resources.
