Health Professions Education Center
Services
The Health Professions Education Center (HPEC) serves the instructional technology needs of the Hunter College Schools of the Health Professions including the School of Nursing and the School of Public Health.

HPEC serves the needs of students and faculty by providing a variety of services described below.

Learning Center

HPEC meets the complex learning needs of students at different instructional levels using audiovisual and computer materials as a primary teaching strategy. Students have access to anatomical charts and models, Computer-Assisted Instructional packages (CAIs), state board test preparation materials, multimedia study carrels, screening rooms, and reserve materials. Media Library

HPEC maintains a valuable library of learning resources, housing the largest video collection of health-related titles within CUNY. The Center provides learning resources to faculty from SHP, 68th Street, and the School of Social Work. Patrons may use materials in screening rooms and study carrels, and are assisted and monitored by HPEC staff in use of these resources. Prior to the start of every semester, we consult with faculty and provide video recommendations that will complement their syllabi.  To learn more about our collection or to search our video catalog, click here.

Faculty Services and A/V Support

From its inception HPEC has promoted the use of new media technologies and has been vital in coordinating and facilitating educational resources for faculty, staff and students. Our staff works with faculty members on integration of instructional technologies into their curricula and on the development of online test materials—a necessity to prepare students for licensing exams.

HPEC helps faculty enhance lectures with the use of visual aids and other reserve materials, acquire new resources, create controlled testing environments, and provide technological support for research studies or other projects.

In addition, HPEC provides smart classroom and audiovisual support to the entire Brookdale campus.

Media Evaluation and Review—Alpha & Beta Testing

For over 15 years, HPEC has served as a beta test site for numerous film, video, and computer software developers. HPEC coordinates beta testing using a comprehensive evaluation process and provides producers with critical feedback and complete product reviews. To learn more, click here.

Special Projects and Supported Centers

In addition to providing learning enrichment services and smart classroom A/V support, HPEC plays a role in many grant-related programs including the Becoming Excellent Students in Transition (BEST) program, which provides pre-entry preparation and retention activities for students interested in careers in nursing and the health professions. The Center also supports the Learning Enhancement Opportunities (LEO) project, a multifaceted approach to enhance learning opportunities for nursing students studying for the nursing certification exam (NCLEX). This project includes a series of online tests, computer tutorials and advisement sessions.

The Center assists faculty with project implementation by assisting with the purchasing and effective utilization of media equipment and assists with embedding instructional technology and media into their research projects, trainings, or grant proposals. Instructors are welcome to make an appointment with our director to discuss appropriate uses of technology in their next project.

HPEC lends support to Hunter's four Health Professions Research Centers, including the Brookdale Center on Healthy Aging and Longevity, Center for Occupational and Environmental Health, Center for Community and Urban Health, and the Center for Communication Disorders.

Office of Research and Grant Support

HPEC's sister organization, the Office of Research and Grant Support (ORGS) assists with the design, management, and dissemination phases of faculty research, as well as with the preparation and submission of research proposals. HPEC works closely with ORGS to ensure faculty members are supported through every phase of their project by providing them with the resources they need for success.
