The Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing of the City University
of New York offers a CCNE accredited program in community/public health
nursing leading to a dual degree option: a Masters in Nursing and a Masters
in Public Health (MS/MPH). The program prepares nurses to assume leadership
roles in community health nursing in a variety of health care settings
including home care, public health, and community-based agencies. Students
learn to apply theories and research findings to nursing practice through
course work and a series of practicums. Students who select the dual degree
option attain additional knowledge of public health sciences, with emphasis
on community health education. Graduates of the program meet educational
requirements for specialty certification by the American Nurses Credentialing
Center.
The dual degree option MS/MPH consists of 57 credits and can be completed by full-time students in four semesters. Students have five years to complete degree requirements, however, and most students earn the degree by attending part-time. Courses are offered in the late afternoons and evenings. Two tracks are available: community health education or environmental and occupational health.
Course of Study (MS/MPH)
The programs consist of core courses shared with other master's level students in nursing, courses in the specialization and health sciences, and cognate electives. Electives may be chosen from any of the many graduate programs offered at Hunter College. Through course work, practicums, and carefully selected electives, students develop an area of expertise related to an aggregate/community, e.g., family nursing, home care, public health, school health, or occupational health. Using nursing process, students apply nursing and public health theories and research to the study of communities and aggregates. Sub specializations in Nursing Persons with HIV/AIDS, Complementary Modalities in Health, and Nursing Education are also available. |
Requirements for Admission
In addition to the graduate admission requirements of Hunter College and the School of Health Sciences (GRE required), students seeking matriculation in the School of Nursing must meet the following requirements:
- Completion of an accredited baccalaureate program in nursing with a GPA of 3.0.
- License and current registration to practice professional nursing in New York State.
- Completion of a basic statistics course or its equivalent. Applicants not fulfilling this requirement may be admitted on condition that they complete a statistics course during their first semester.
Tuition and Fees*
