The Generic Pathway is for those
students who do not have an RN license.
The undergraduate division consists
of two parts: lower division (general education)
and upper division (professional education).
Students are considered for admission to the Generic
Pathway Program for the fall semester only, and only
after completing lower division courses. An
overall college GPA of 3.0 is required in addition to other
requirements. A minimum grade of “C”
must be attained for all required prerequisites. Generic Pathway students
must attend during the day on a full-time basis.
Only Matriculated Hunter College students
can apply to the Generic Pathway Program. A
student who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor
will have to undergo investigation by the Office of
Professional Discipline, which might result in licensure
being withheld. The program also provides a
foundation for graduate study at the Master’s
level, which is also offered by the Hunter-Bellevue
School of Nursing.
The program is designed to be completed
in four academic years by students who are admitted
with no college credit and attend full-time.
Second degree and transfer students course of study
will be affected by the number of credits accepted
and number of courses taken per semester.
Clinical Practicum schedules are
determined based on resources and clinical facilities.
Clinical schedules may be 2 consecutive mornings,
a full day, weekend and evening hours. Criminal
background checks may be required by the clinical
facilities.
I. HUNTER COLLEGE
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Hunter College does not admit students directly into the nursing program. You must first be admitted to Hunter College, be matriculated, and then apply to the School of Nursing. To apply to Hunter College, select one of the following two categories depending upon your education
background:
A. High School Graduates
You must complete a Freshman Application and apply
through the University Processing Center for Admission
to the lower division program. You can apply online. Applications
are available at: www.cuny.edu/apply
Once admitted to Hunter College, it is highly recommended
that you begin taking courses to meet the lower division
Generic Pathway prerequisites. Students
are advised to carefully read sections III & IV
of this page. Please be advised that there is no "preclinical" program. You need to file a separate application to the School of Nursing (instructions below).
B. Transfer Students
It is recommended that an undergraduate transfer application
be filed by October 1st for admission to Hunter College
in the Spring semester and by February 15th for the Fall
semester to Hunter College. Applications are
available online at: www.cuny.edu/apply. Please be advised that there is no "preclinical" program. You need to file a separate application to the School of Nursing (see instructions below).
II. Transfer Credit
College courses taken elsewhere
may meet entrance conditions, but may not necessarily
have Hunter equivalents that satisfy degree requirements.
Nursing courses are not transferable to Hunter College
but some courses may transfer in as open electives.
III. Final Admission
Requirements
All students are required to pass
the CUNY Skills Assessment Test in reading, writing
and math. US Baccalaureate degree students are
exempted. Students who are unable to demonstrate
proficiency or who do not take the exam will not be
permitted to register in the nursing major.
Take these tests as early as possible. Contact
(212) 722-4898 for information on testing. Most
sophomores at Hunter will probably have already satisfied
the requirements.
IV. How to Apply to the School of Nursing
Applicants should obtain an application to the School of Nursing online or at the Admissions Office, and submit it PRIOR to the deadline to the Hunter College Admissions Office, Hunter College North, Room 203. Obtain a receipt. Please ensure you include only your Hunter College email address on your application. Notification of admission will ONLY be sent to a Hunter College email address.
In order to be considered for admission
into the Generic Pathway Program, applicants must
meet eligibility requirements and admission criteria. All students applying to the Upper Division Generic
Nursing Pathway must have a college GPA of
3.0 or above by the end of the fall semester
preceding spring application. Students who do
not meet this GPA requirement are not eligible to
apply and cannot take the National League of Nursing
Pre-Admission – RN Examination (administered
in March of the spring application semester. (Current fee is $65). Students must complete
60 credits by the start of the semester of admission.
All applicants must complete all but two pre-requisite
required courses (ENG 120, CHEM 100-101 including
lab, CHEM 120-121 including lab, BIOL 120-121 including
lab, BIOL 230 including lab, PSYCH 100-150, STAT 113)
with a grade of “C” or better by the end
of the fall semester preceding March 1 application
deadline. Students applying may take
the last two pre-requisites required courses during
the spring semester of the admission process.
Pre-requisites can not be taken on a Credit/No-Credit
basis.
Proof of successful completion
of courses taken in the spring must be received by
the School of Nursing by July 1; otherwise you will
be ineligible to register as a nursing major at Hunter
College. If the student does not achieve a C in any prerequisites, their admission will be revoked.
Acceptance of the student into the
major is based on the following admission criteria:
- Composite Admission score (GPA
plus score on NLN Pre-Admission –
RN Examination)
- Completion of all admission requirements
The composite score of all students
applying for admission at the same time will be rank
ordered from highest to lowest. Students will
be accepted for admission based on this ranked composite
score and the completion of all other admission requirements.
Failure to meet all admission criteria will require
reapplication for the following year, with no guarantee
of acceptance.
All generic students admitted to
the program are required to submit evidence of liability
insurance, health insurance, medical records with
specific immunizations and CPR certification prior
to entering the first semester of the nursing major.
In addition to tuition fees, other academic year expenses
for independent students include medical examination,
health insurance, Malpractice insurance ($20), uniforms,
equipment and other miscellaneous expenses ($300),
textbooks/supplies, transportation, housing, food
and other personal expenses, NLN-Pre-Admission Exam
– RN (current fee $65), National student Nurses
Association Annual dues ($20/year x 2yrs = $40) and
criminal background check ($50-$100).
Please note that if you are accepted to the School of Nursing, you do NOT need to complete a "Change of Major" form.
