The RN Pathway is for RNs who have completed a nursing program and have or are about to receive a current license.

The program consists of two parts:  a lower division (liberal arts and sciences) and an upper division (professional education).  Students are considered for admission to the School of Nursing for the fall or spring semester.  Graduates are awarded a BS (Nursing) degree.  The program provides a foundation for graduate study at the Master’s level, which is also offered by the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing.  How long it takes transfer or second degree students to complete the program depends on such factors as the number of applicable transfer credits they have and how many courses they take each semester.  Students may attend part-time or full-time.  Some courses are available during late afternoon and evening hours.  All nursing courses are scheduled on Thursday.

I.  REQUIREMENTS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR ADMISSION

To be considered for admission to the RN upper division pathway, registered nurses must:

  • Be licensed to practice as a registered nurse in New York State by December 1 for students admitted in the fall semester or June 1 for students admitted in the spring semester.  Students unable to document receiving an RN license will not be permitted to continue in the nursing major.
  • Applicants to the RN Pathway program must have completed 36 credits of liberal arts and sciences (including credits in progress) at an accredited college, plus the equivalent of 24 curriculum upper division.  CUNY transfer RN students will be granted 24 nursing credits for advanced placement.  All other students admitted to the RN Pathway program must take the Nursing Regents College Examination (RCE’s) in Adult Nursing, Maternal and Child Nursing and Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing at the Baccalaureate level.  A score of “C” or better is acceptable.  Information about RCE exams is available at: www.Excelsior.edu

While a college grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 is the minimum requirement for admission consideration, it does not guarantee admission.
Courses taken during the spring and/or summer semesters are considered when determining eligibility for the fall semester.  Please be sure to include information about such courses when filing your application. Students applying for the spring semester must list all courses in progress for the fall.  All courses taken for credit at all institutions must be listed.

II.  FINAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

If you fail to meet any of the following conditions, you will be required to reapply for admission to the program the next semester.  Previous acceptance does not apply.  Also, if you do not register for courses after being accepted, you must file a readmission application.

  1. Students admitted to the RN Pathway program who are completing academic course requirements for admission during the spring, summer, or fall semester are admitted on a conditional basis.   Proof of successful completion of these courses is required for final admission to the nursing major.  Students who fail to substantiate this information with the Nursing office at Hunter College prior to registration are not permitted to register as a nursing major at Hunter College.  However, students may register for liberal arts courses.
  2. All students, except those who have already earned a US Baccalaureate degree, are required to pass the CUNY Skills Assessment Tests in reading, writing and math prior to the beginning of the semester.  Students unable to demonstrate minimum proficiency or who fail to take the exam will not be permitted to register for the nursing major.
  3. Students admitted to the RN Pathway program must submit a copy of their RN license prior to registering for courses.  Students who have yet been awarded the Registered Professional Nurse license, but have taken the NCLEX, are admitted conditionally.  Proof of receipt of the RN license must be submitted to the Nursing Office at Hunter College by December 1 for students admitted in the fall and June 1 for students admitted in the spring.  Students unable to document receiving the license will not be permitted to continue in the nursing major.  In addition, all RN Pathway students admitted to the program are required to submit evidence of NYS Professional Nurse licensure and current registration, liability insurance, health insurance and CPR certification prior to entering the first semester of the nursing major.  Criminal background checks may be required by the clinical facilities.

III.  How to Apply

A.  Students NOT currently attending Hunter College
File a CUNY transfer application.  Applications are available online at: www.cuny.edu/apply.  Application deadlines are October 1 for entrance to the spring semester and February 1 for entrance to the fall semester.  Select the RN Pathway application only (0346 or 03346).  Any applications received after these dates will be processed on a space-available basis.

B.  Students currently attending Hunter College
Submit a CUNY transfer application available online at: www.cuny.edu/apply.  Select the RN Pathway application (0346 or 3346).

IV.   Transfer Credit

Students with previous college work or a degree should be aware that college courses that satisfy admission requirements for a major may not necessarily have Hunter equivalents that satisfy degree requirements.  Please note that credit values for a course taken elsewhere need not be equal to the Hunter courses.

CUNY transfer RN students are exempt from taking the Nursing Regents College Examination and will be granted 24 nursing credits for advanced placement.  All other students admitted to the RN Pathway program must take the Nursing Regents College Examination (RCE’s) in Adult Nursing, Maternal and Child Nursing and Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing at the Baccalaureate level.  A score of “C” or better is acceptable.
