Internship (SOC 498)

The department of sociology offers the possibility of gaining credits through the completion of internships. These internships take place off campus in professional non-social service settings and last three months. In order to quality you must meet the requirements listed below. Please note that you should approach potential faculty supervisors about your internship during the term preceding the term you want to intern. Internships cannot be arranged on short notice.

In order to register, students must meet the following prerequisites:

  • Major in sociology
  • Completion of Introduction to Sociology (SOC 101)
  • Completion of at least one theory course in sociology (SOC 221 or 223)
  • Completion of Methodology (SOC 240)

They need to obtain the written permission of a full time faculty member who will be supervising the student during the internship. From 3-6 credits can be earned during the internship, depending on the number of days worked. In order to receive credits and a satisfactory grade the student must submit an analytic internship report. Supervising faculty can also request a written evaluation by the internship supervisor and set other additional requirements.

Internships can be arranged through Hunter's Internships office (call Paula Wiklow, Career Development, Hunter College East room 807, tel: 212-772-4850) and your faculty mentor. The academic mentor must be a full time faculty member of the department of Sociology. The specifics of the internship are worked out between you and your faculty mentor.

Please note that you cannot register for an internship unless you have already secured a placement and faculty supervision.
