Irwin Epstein, Ph.D. was ensconced in the Columbia University School of Social Work Hall of Fame at the Annual Alumni Reunion on Friday, May 2nd.



On Monday, May 5th HCSSW recognized 13 faculty members who had authored articles in the 20th edition of NASW's Encyclopedia of Social Work. This ground breaking work was co-edited by Hunter Professor Terry Mizrahi and Larry Davis. Terry Mizrahi is a former national president of NASW.

Two of our doctoral students, Mohan Krishna and Moctezuma Garcia, had abstracts accepted for the Social Work Doctoral Symposium sponsored by the University of Houston PhD Program in Social Welfare. Mohan will be presenting research about gay parenting, and Moctezuma will be presenting about the relationship between Latino culture, religiosity and AIDS beliefs.

Steve Burghardt and Tony Young led HCSSW's effort for The 2008 Shadow Count, a volunteer effort to count the homeless in NYC. Professor Burghardt was part of the Mayor's 3/4/08 Press Conference. Click here to view the clip.

Alexandra Smith, one of our graduating students won one of the prestigious Soros Justice Fellowships for her project "Out of the Box" about persons with psychiatric disorders being held in solitary confinement in prisons. She will start her 18 month fellowship this September. To read more about Alexandra and her work click here
Gary Mallon has been named Editor of the Child Welfare Journal. The Child Welfare Journal has historically been the primary journal in the field of child welfare and has the most impact in influencing child welfare services nationally.

Professor Annette Mahoney, expert in Caribbean immigration was awarded the Caribbean American Association's, "Leader Among Peers Award " on December 8, 2007. On February 9th she will address the 3rd Annual Conference on the Health of the African Diaspora sponsored by the NYU Medical Center on her work on Caribbean Adolescents in the United States.

Two faculty members were selected to participate in the Roosevelt House seminar program for 2008-2009. Mimi Abramovitz will present "Welfare Reform: The U-Turn in Public Policy and Welfare Rights." and S.J. Dodd will present "Cleaning the Lens: Addressing Heterocentrist Bias in U.S. Social Policy.

Professor Elizabeth Danto was awarded the Goethe Award for Psychoanalytic Scholarship for the best psychoanalyic book written in 2005 for her book, Freud's Free Clinics. Prof. Danto has written and lectured widely on the history of psychoanalysis and its early roots in progressive politics.
Terry Mizrahi received the "New York State Social Work Educator of the Year" Award from the NYS Social Work Education Association and was their keynote speaker on October 5, 2007 at their annual conference.
Dr. Samuel R. Aymer presented two workshops at New York State Crime Victims Board 2007 statewide conference in Syracuse, New York on October 3. The topics of his workshops were: The Impact of Violence and Trauma on the Family and Group Counseling with Victims of Crime.
