A Message From the Dean
I am delighted to welcome you to Silberman School of Social Work, the oldest and the largest publicly sponsored graduate social work program in New York. Whether you are a student, a faculty member, a human services staff person, or an alumnus(a), I invite you to participate in the challenge set forth by our motto, “Real People. Real Solutions.”
Our student body is diverse and mature, and intent on making a difference within our School, in New York City, and in the world. Our students are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of their clients and to promoting human rights and social justice in the larger community. Students assume an active role in their education at Hunter – participating in discussions in our small classes, carrying out research projects, leading our student government and our student alliances, and planning our Common Days. Human service agencies and organizations throughout New York City and the surrounding counties in both the private and public sectors (even many elected officials) want our students as interns. Our doctoral program in social welfare, offered by the Graduate Center at CUNY at the Silberman School of Social Work, is intended for students already possessing real-world experience and strives to develop scholars who are experts in finding the best fit between research design and the social situation they choose to study.
The faculty members of the School are known nationally and internationally for their teaching, service, and scholarship. They are focused on agency-based social work practice, education of their students, and community-engaged scholarship in their research and writing. Faculty members are available to students, supportive of innovation, and active participants in the School, the community, and the profession.
Our graduates take seriously their responsibility for the common good, they respect people in need, and they seek to humanize the helping process.
As one of the nation’s finest schools of social work, Silberman SSW invites you to consider the challenge we offer and welcomes you to our program.
