Dr.
Tempel has been a practitioner, supervisor, administrator
and consultant in agency-based mental health, preventive
services, and private practice settings. Her interests
focus on the development of a working alliance with
difficult-to-engage clients within the framework of
burdened and chaotic systems; and the analysis of
practice-based qualitative research findings for the
expansion of social work theories and practices. Her
current research focuses on the linkages between child
welfare practices and the families served in contract
agencies such as preventive services, foster care
and mental health settings. Supported by the NRCFCPPP
at Hunter, she is completing a study about the impact
of child protective services on the early alliance
between preventive services social workers and parents
within the child welfare system. Dr. Tempel represents
Hunter College in several child welfare educational
initiatives under the auspices of the NYS Social Work
Education Consortium. She teaches courses in the Casework
Sequence and has also taught Professional Seminar
as well as the Seminar in Field Instruction.
