Dean Jacqueline Mondros and
Professor Terry Mizrahi were hosted
by Ben Gurion University, Haifa University,
Hebrew University, and the Ministry
of Social Affairs in a tour through
Israel in May. They visited with many
community groups, including a Bedouin
women's collaborative. |
 Dr. Terry Mizrahi received
the President's Award for Applied Scholarship
at a reception on May . The award was
in part a recognition of her co-editorship
of the 2008 Encyclopedia of Social Work,
the most widely used source in the field. |
 Irwin Epstein, Ph.D. was ensconced in the
Columbia University School of Social
Work Hall of Fame at the Annual Alumni
Reunion on Friday, May 2nd.

| On Monday, May 5th HCSSW recognized
13 faculty members who had authored
articles in the 20th edition of NASW's
Encyclopedia of Social Work. This
ground breaking work was co-edited
by Hunter Professor Terry Mizrahi
and Larry Davis. Terry Mizrahi is
a former national president of NASW. |
| Two of our doctoral students,
Mohan Krishna and Moctezuma Garcia,
had abstracts accepted for the Social
Work Doctoral Symposium sponsored
by the University of Houston PhD Program
in Social Welfare. Mohan will be presenting
research about gay parenting, and
Moctezuma will be presenting about
the relationship between Latino culture,
religiosity and AIDS beliefs.

  Steve Burghardt and Tony Young
led HCSSW's effort for The 2008 Shadow
Count, a volunteer effort to count
the homeless in NYC. Professor Burghardt
was part of the Mayor's 3/4/08 Press

 Alexandra Smith, one of our graduating
students won one of the prestigious
Soros Justice Fellowships for her project
"Out of the Box" about persons with
psychiatric disorders being held in
solitary confinement in prisons. She
will start her 18 month fellowship this

 Gary Mallon has been named Editor of the
Child Welfare Journal. The Child Welfare
Journal has historically been the primary
journal in the field of child welfare
and has the most impact in influencing
child welfare services nationally.
