What is Kognito At-Risk?
Kognito At-Risk is an online interactive simulation program designed to help faculty and staff identify, reach out to, and assist students who may be in emotional distress. In essence, Kognito gives faculty and staff the opportunity to practice having difficult or challenging conversations with students in distress so that they can act with sensitivity and compassion in real life.
How does Kognito Work?
Users assume the role of Professor Hampton and engage in conversation with student avatars. Professor Hampton is concerned about 5 students in his class, 3 of whom need to be referred to appropriate mental health services. After evaluating the students based on their behavior, appearance and academic performance, users select which students they believe are most at risk and engage them in conversation.
Kognito At-Risk takes approximately 45 minutes to complete and can be done in multiple sessions as needed.
How is this relevant to me?
Mental health issues have a significant impact on academic performance, student retention and overall student success. As a faculty or staff member you are a "gatekeeper" because you regularly have significant contact with students. This places you in a unique and valuable position on campus to notice and take action when students are experiencing emotional distress.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is consistently the 2nd or 3rd leading cause of death among college-age students. A 2009 national research study suggested that more than half of Hunter students may have experienced mental health concerns at some point in their lives. More than a quarter of students surveyed reported having seriously considered suicide, and of those, more than 1 in 5 reported thoughts of suicide within the last year.
What do I do if a student needs help right now?
Call 212.772.4931 and offer to accompany the student to Counseling Services in 1123E. Counseling Services is open M-F 9am-5pm. For on-campus emergencies or assistance after 5pm, call Public Safety: 212.772.4444.
