Kognito At-Risk FAQ:

What is Kognito At-Risk?

Kognito At-Risk is an online game-based simulation program that is designed to help students identify, connect with, and assist friends or classmates who may be in emotional distress. In essence, Kognito allows you the opportunity to practice having difficult conversations with fellow students around issues of mental health so that you can respond  with sensitivity and compassion in real life.

How does Kognito Work?

Students play the role of "Jesse" who has some concerns about his friends. After observing his friends in a number of social situations taking place over the course of a semester, students must indicate which of Jesse's friends they are most concerned about. They then engage in a conversation with this friend about their concerns. Kognito takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and can be done in multiple sessions as needed.

How is this relevant to me?

As a Hunter College student, chances are that you or someone you know has been impacted by emotional distress, mental health difficulties or even suicide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is consistently the 2nd or 3rd leading cause of death among college students. A 2009 national research study suggested that more that half of Hunter students may have experienced mental health concerns at some point in their lives. More than a quarter of students surveyed reported having seriously considered suicide, and of those, more than 1 in 5 reported thoughts of suicide within the last year.
