Integrating into the Job Market Workshop: A Disability Awareness Month Event!

In honor of Disability Awareness Month of April, The MIND Alliance, in collaboration with the Office of AccessABILITY and the Science Mathematics Opportunities Network (SciMON), we are pleased to offer an Integrating into the Job Market Workshop.

Come learn imperative skills for attaining a position with both deaf and hearing employers. This job readiness training will focus on effective resume and cover letter writing as well as dressing for success, networking, interview skills, and the soft skills needed to break into careers.

Presented by Counselors Renae Noveck, and James Poyerd.

Accommodation in the Academic Setting  
•    The goal of accommodation
•    Meaningful access is not about lowering academic standards
•    The need to strike the proper balance

•    The obligate of students to exercise due diligence

Deciding if a Student with a Disability is Qualified to Participate in a Program 
•    Who gets to participate?
•    What are legitimate factors to consider?
•    What are essential requirements?
•    Why declaring that something is a fundamental alteration does not resolve the matter?
•    What must the decision-making process look like?

Clinical Placements, Licensure requirements, etc.
•    Academic knowledge to workplace performance
•    Enforcing technical/professional standards
•    Addressing unsafe or inappropriate behavior
•    Avoiding discriminatory treatment

Dr. Heyward is a respected speaker and trainer in the area of disability discrimination law and disability management, and is frequently asked to provide legal background for productions concerning disability issues, for NBC, CNN, ESPN, The New York Times, the Christian Science Monitor, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. Dr. Heyward’s firm, Salome Heyward & Associates, provides disability compliance services and products to colleges and universities. Her team has extensive experience in the areas of adaptive technology, regulatory compliance, disability service programming, and the provision of auxiliary aids and services to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing and who are blind or have low vision.
