Are You Planning to Travel Outside the U.S.?

Are you planning to travel during the summer months? If so, please come to our office at least a week before your planned departure date and ask an advisor to sign your I-20 or DS-2019. Remember that re-entry to the United States requires a recent (within 3 months) signature from a Designated School Official for F-1 status holders or an Alternate Responsible Officer for J-1 Exchange Visitor holders.

For summer travel, try to get your I-20s signed before May 24. 2013.

In addition, if you have recently applied for post-completion OPT you should ask an International Students Advisor regarding whether you can travel or if you should wait for your EAD card to arrive.

If you require a signature during walk-in hours, please check-in at Room 1119 East Building and wait to be called. Appointments can be made by calling 212-772-4864 or via email at intlss@hunter.cuny.edu.

Deadline: May 24

Attention Summer 2013 Graduates!

Get Post-completion Optional Practical Training

As an F-1 student, you are entitled to up to 12 months of employment in your field. This post-completion employment authorization is called "Optional Practical Training" or OPT. You get 12 months of practical training for each higher degree you obtain. That includes separate 12-month periods for Associate, Bachelor's, Master's and other graduate programs.

If the summer session 2013 is your last session and you plan to apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT), you should apply no later than one month from the completion date or final examination date (at least one month before June 27, July 6, July 8, July 15, July 29, August 1, August 12, and August 19) or the end of the particular summer session you plan to complete studies. If you file for OPT later than a month before the last final exam, it may reduce the amount of time that you are allowed to work in the United States. To apply for OPT; students must first file a Degree Audit Application Form (DAAF) with the Office of the Registrar.

For further questions or to make an appointment to start processing your application, please e-mail Iris Aroyewun-Birchwood at iris.aroyewun@hunter.cuny.edu or Xavier Remigio at xremigio@hunter.cuny.edu.

Start applying May 27

I-94 System to Switch Over to Electronic Issuing

The I-94 document needs to be completed during your plane flight, prior to arrival in the US, and is the document that is stamped and attached to your passport to show that you have entered the USA.

As of April 30th 2013, the Department of Homeland Security has begun rolling out their new electronic process. This means that the paper form will no longer be needed at entry and instead all the information will be attached to a record online that the immigration officer can pull up when a student enters the United States.

However, if travelers require a copy of their I-94 (record of admission) for any reason then it can be obtained from www.cbp.gov/I94.

Effective Date: May 31
