Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge

Join us for a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, as our guide recounts the dramatic and fascinating story of how it was constructed. Explore the rich architectural, social, and literary history of The Heights as we stroll the tree-lined streets and visit sites associated with Walt Whitman, Truman Capote, and Henry Ward Beecher. This is one tour that you will never forget!

Summer Housing Options for International Students at I-House

International House (I-House), located at Riverside Drive, offers a welcoming community of approximately 700 students and interns from around the globe and provides a wide variety of programs and activities. Facilities include a dining room, gymnasium, fitness center, computer lab, music practice rooms and study centers.

Please also see Women's International Leadership Program Award (below) for residents of International House during the 2016-2017 academic year.

Who can live at I-House for the summer?

  • Students who are enrolled full-time* during the spring, summer, OR fall semester 2016
  • Interns & trainees who are working full-time* during the summer of 2016
  • Visiting scholars at an NYC educational institution in the summer of 2016
  • At least 18 years old and undergraduate level or higher
  • From any country, including the United States
  • Staying for a minimum of 30 days

*Full-time: Students must be registered for a full course load. Interns and trainees must be working 35-40 hours/week. Part-time enrollment or work does not qualify you to apply to International House.

Information Sessions for the New 24-Month STEM OPT Extension

On March 11, the Department of Homeland Security passed a final rule that allows for certain F-1 students who are receiving STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) degrees to apply for a 24-month extension of their post-completion OPT. The New 24-month STEM Extension will become effective on May 10 and replace the current 17-month STEM OPT rule.

Throughout the month of May you can learn more information about the new and improved 24-month STEM Extension and how it affects you, by joining us for a workshop where we will answer questions and provide more details.

Women's International Leadership Program for Graduate Students

Awards of $2,000 each will be granted to eighteen women selected by the WIL Advisory Council to participate in the 2016-17 WIL Program. This program is a yearlong series of seminars, workshops and projects, designed to identify and strengthen individual leadership skills within the culturally diverse group of women. These grants are based on merit and demonstrated leadership skills or potential. The WIL Program is sponsored by a generous grant from Bayer HealthCare. All WIL grantees must be resident members of International House for the entire 2016-2017 academic year.

Awards for International Students!

The Kenneth E. Clark Student Research Award

The International Leadership Association (ILA) are pleased to partner with the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) to sponsor the annual Kenneth E. Clark Student Research Award. This award recognizes outstanding unpublished papers by undergraduate and graduate students, and is named in honor of the distinguished scholar and former Chief Executive Officer of the Center.

The Travel Insurety International Student Scholarship

This is a one-time $5,000 USD scholarship. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist students studying outside of their home country with their educational expenses. To be eligible, you must be an American Student studying abroad or an International Student studying in the U.S. You need not be a client to be eligible.

Fredric M. Jablin Doctoral Dissertation Award

In partnership with Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond, the ILA annually presents the Fredric M. Jablin Doctoral Dissertation Award to a scholar whose doctoral dissertation research demonstrates substantial insights and implications for the study of leadership. The dissertation can be on any topic and from any discipline, and was established to honor and celebrate the life of Dr. Fredric M. Jablin.

Leo S. Rowe Fund for International Students

The Rowe Fund is an educational loan program of the Organization of American States (OAS) that help citizens from Latin America and Caribbean OAS Member States to finance their studies or research by awarding interest-free loans of up to $15,000. Applications are accepted and reviewed year-round.

Support, Condolences for Japanese Students

The International Students Office at Hunter College extends its condolences to all Japanese students who may have been affected by the earthquakes in Japan on Thursday and Friday of last week. If you are a Japanese student and have any questions about your immigration status and your continued enrollment at Hunter, we strongly encourage you to visit the International Students Office.

Our international student advisors and staff are available to provide you with information, assistance and referrals in the areas listed below:

  • Filling an application for off-campus employment (severe economic necessity) with U.S. Immigration Services
  • Requesting a reduction in course load (less than 12 credits)
  • Requesting to speak with a counselor in Counseling and Wellness Services
  • Requesting an official temporary leave of absence from school
  • Extending your course completion date on your I-20 form or DS-2016
