Save the Date! Panel on Community Organizing:

Skills for Advocates and Aspiring Lawyers sm heading

Former President Barack Obama's three-year stretch as a grassroots organizer in the demoralized landscape of Chicago's South Side figures prominently in the narrative of his life. Campaigning in Iowa, Mr. Obama called it "the best education I ever had, better than anything I got at Harvard Law School." About a third of his memoir is devoted to his Chicago organizing period.

Community organizing has historical roots in challenging inequality, building capacity, and meeting the needs of local people through collective action; it is a type of social work practice. A social work degree is not a requirement for community organizing, but does provide a direct path into the field. This panel will feature discussion by activists who will share their experiences and discuss the nature of their work; more details on panelists will be shared closer to the date.

The discussion will also include a brief description of the skills that an MSW can offer in this area. Students interested in advocacy-whether through law, social work, policy or non-profit administration-will find this a worthwhile conversation.

Date: Wednesday, April 26
Time: 1:00 - 2:00 pm
Place: Four Freedoms Room, Roosevelt House, 47-49 East 65th Street, Manhattan

Please RSVP here.
