The GSA Activity Fund Scholarship - Available on February 6

The Graduate Student Association is offering the GSA Activity Fund Scholarship to currently enrolled graduate students as a means of reducing the Student Activity Fee surplus by $60,000.

The first 200 qualified applications received will be awarded a scholarship in the amount of $300 each, on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED basis. The scholarship is a one-time-only offer in the Spring 2012 Semester.

Eligibility:

  • Available to continuing students enrolled in a graduate program at Hunter, who have accrued at least 3 credits. It is open to all graduate students, (including International Students, regardless of immigration status).
  • Must also be enrolled in a minimum of 3 credits for the Spring 2012 semester.
  • Be among the first 200 qualified applicants to qualify - (Qualified applicants have at least 3 accrued credits and are registered for 3 or more credits in the Spring 2012 semester).

How To Apply:

  • Applications will be accepted starting Monday, February 6, 2012 at 12:01am.
  • Applicants must apply online at: https://ww3.hunter.cuny.edu/sg/view.php?id=3. (The above link is the only way to apply for the GSA Activity Fund Scholarship)
  • After submitting the application, a message is sent, stating that the application has been successfully submitted, followed by an email receipt.
  • First 200 applications will be vetted through SIMS to verify that the applicants meet the requirements to be awarded the GSA scholarship.

Effective Date:
The online applications will be available on Monday, February 6, 2012 at 12:01AM.
The deadline is March 1, 2012.  (Applications received after 5:00 pm on March 1 will not be considered).

Public Service Scholar Program – Information Session

The Public Service Scholar Program is now accepting applications for the 2012-2013 academic year. We seek motivated and enthusiastic undergraduates (particularly women and minority-group members) who are interested in exploring public service careers.

The Public Service Scholar Program offers students a year-long, hands-on learning opportunity, with a 20-hour per week internship in a public or nonprofit agency and two weekly seminars, taught by experienced leaders. The seminars explore the most pressing policy issues in New York City and how organizations function and play a role in policy. Students receive 12 credits in Urban Studies and a stipend. The program is open to all majors. Applicants should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be within 45 credits of graduation by Fall 2012 (i.e., upper juniors or lower seniors).

We strongly encourage you to attend an information session on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 from 1:10 – 2:30 p.m. in Hunter West, Room 415. Program staff and current Public Service Scholars will be on hand to answer your questions.

The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program

Are You Considering Applying to Graduate School?
The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program is currently seeking Hunter students with a 3.0 or higher grade point average and at least 45 credits. Students selected for the program will have approximately two years remaining until graduation.

The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program prepares academically promising undergraduate students, who have an interest in obtaining doctoral degrees, by providing support in many areas. Accepted students attend six-week summer research opportunity programs and participate in an array of activities throughout the year. Program participants may receive a stipend up to $2,800 per academic year upon successful completion of stated activities and goals.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) preparation workshops are also offered at various points. The program provides assistance with graduate application preparation, faculty mentoring, and research presentation opportunities at various conferences. Program participants visit numerous university campuses and meet graduate admissions officials.

Senior McNair Scholars have been accepted to doctoral programs with funding at numerous universities throughout the country, including Columbia, Yale, University of Chicago, University of Michigan, University of California-San Diego, Cornell, New York University, Rutgers, SUNY-Albany, University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, and University of Pennsylvania. Also, junior McNair Scholars have participated in paid Summer Research Opportunity Programs at Princeton, University of Illinois-Chicago, Stanford, Yale, and many other institutions.

Eligible students, as defined by federal regulations, must be a) both low income and first-generation college attendees, or b) from groups (Black [non-Hispanic], Hispanic, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiians, or Native American Pacific Islanders) underrepresented in graduate education. Program participants are required to be citizens, nationals, or permanent residents of the United States.

S & W Senior Scholarship for Graduate Study

The Hunter College Scholarship and Welfare Fund of the Alumni Association is offering scholarships, for Hunter College undergraduate students, to be used towards the first year of graduate study at any graduate or professional school. Hunter students who are US citizens or permanent residents and who graduate January, June or September 2012 are eligible to apply. Applicants must have at least a 3.50 GPA for their most recent 36 credits completed-to-date at Hunter and must begin graduate study no later than September 2014. The range of the awards is $500- $4000.

The New York Needs You (NYNY) Fellowship Program

This innovative two-year career development and leadership program is accepting applications now for its June 2012 program.  NYNY will provide eligible, ambitious, first-generation college students with intensive mentoring and support to realize their full potential.

Core features of the program include:

  • A stipend of $1,250 per year (up to $2,500 for the two year commitment).
    Biweekly Saturday Workshops that will foster development of relationships with over 200 highly accomplished NYNY mentor-coaches and community business leaders.
    Curricula that focus on life-planning, development of critical skills, public speaking, personal finance, written communication, relations management and interviewing.
    Opportunities to apply skills learned through leading projects such as career workshops that will help improve success rates for their peers.
  • Access to summer internships at prestigious companies and organizations.

The CUNY Pipeline Program for Careers in College Teaching and Research

The program is administered by the Office of Educational Opportunity and Diversity Programs at the CUNY Graduate Center and is designed to provide educational and financial support for underrepresented college juniors interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in preparation for college-level teaching and advanced research in any discipline.

Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents. Students receive a stipend of approximately $5000, which covers the costs of graduate school applications, a GRE preparation course, the GRE, and a full-time summer workshop.
