Most students who attend Hunter College do not live in the residence hall. While there are over 20,000 students currently attending Hunter College, only 612 reside in the residence hall. Most students live in apartments and opt to commute from the outer boroughs.

The Room Assignment Process

The Hunter Brookdale Residence houses approximately 612 students. Due to our shortage of space we receive many more requests for housing than we can accommodate, therefore we can not guarantee housing space to every student. The current policy for assignment of rooms provides priority status for returning residents and for students who have been accepted into special academic and scholarship programs.

If you are not selected to receive a room, you are placed on the waiting list. Again, your place on the waiting list is dependent upon a number of factors. It is not one long list of names that are taken in order. For example, if a female first-year student decides to cancel her room assignment, then we cannot take a male graduate student in her place.

Please note that housing is reserved for full-time students only. You must be enrolled in and successfully complete 12 credit hours (undergraduate) and you must maintain a GPA 2.0 or above each semester in order to continue to live in the Residence Hall. Also, please be aware that the housing contract stipulates that residents will use their rooms as their primary places of residence during the contract term.

In order to comply with newly adopted state laws regarding accountability for students in on-campus housing, the Office of Residence Life requires that all residents attend monthly floor meetings. Residents who fail to attend the floor meeting and who fail to sign the occupancy sheet will be considered as “Not in Residence”. The Office of Residence Life reserves the right to cancel the contract of any resident who is classified as “Not in Residence” for more than one month.

Tours

Tour hours change every semester depending on our work student’s office hours. Please call our office for current days and hours. Please note that you must schedule a tour as they will not be granted without previous arrangement.

Dining Facilities

Our residence hall houses a small cafe located on our main floor. Hours of operations are: Monday to Thursday 7:30am to 7pm – Friday 7:30am to 2:30pm Saturday and Sunday closed. There is also a small store run by the RA staff that is open 6PM to11PM, Sunday thru Thursday.

Refrigerator Rentals

Students are allowed to keep a small refrigerator in their rooms- no larger than 4.5 cubic ft. Residents can bring their own refrigerator or have a rental. Collegiate Storage and Rentals offers refrigerator rentals delivered to the resident’s room at check in or by appointment. They have representatives on the Brookdale Campus at check in and check out for immediate delivery and pick-up. For more information, please visit  Collegiate Storage and Rentals.

Summer Storage

If you choose not to live in the Residence Hall over the Summer Term, you will be required to remove your belongings from the the room until you return in the Fall. Also, if you go on Study Abroad or other exchange programs, you will be required to vacate your room for the term of your absence.
