Hunter Peer Educator
What does it mean to be a Hunter Peer Educator?
Hunter Peer Health Educators will be a group of dynamic student volunteers who are ready and willing to make a significant contribution to Hunter College. Students will volunteer 3 or more hours a week to help create and distribute positive health and wellness messages to the Hunter College community. Hunter Peer Health Educators will use what they have learned in the classroom as well as their own knowledge of being a student to encourage their peers to make healthier choices. This will help not only student’s health, but their academic careers. They will understand that their contribution to Wellness Services will positively affect themselves and the peers they reach.
Some Important things that you should know:
You are required to participate in at least 3 hours/week of volunteer activities. This may seem like a lot but remember, we have a lot of great activities to create and make happen and you will get to be a part of it. Here is how it works.
- Training
You will be required to attend an hour long weekly meeting which will serve as a time to talk about upcoming activities and training sessions. In training you will learn core skills, do team building and many fun activities.
- Attendance and Participation
You will be required to volunteer for 3 hours per week. This may include sitting at a table, doing outreach, working with others to help plan an upcoming program, or creating/posting health related posters and flyers around campus.
- Experiential Learning
Through participation in certain activities (Hunter Health Connection, creating media, etc.), volunteering for certain projects (sitting booths, coordinating events, helping with the Health Fair etc.) and continuing education (presenting, going to presentations, etc.) you will be fulfilling your required hours with activities to meet your needs and interests.
Expectations
Peer educators are expected to act as a positive role model for the program and Hunter College at all times. While understanding that all peer educators are students, there is an expectation that peer educators are an administrative extension of the office and are encouraged to maintain a positive and healthy pattern of behavior while enrolled in the program. In all cases, the instructors reserve the right to dismiss a student from the program based upon a peer educator’s performance inside and outside of the classroom experience. There is a GPA requirement that all peer educators must meet which is approximately a 2.4.
What’s in it for you?
- Gain leadership experience that will make you more marketable
- National certification as a Peer Educator
- Great community service opportunities
- Have fun…
- Meet new people…
- Make a difference…
- Broaden your horizons.
