Ability to Benefit (ATB)

The exam will be conducted in person with a proctor.

The New York State Ability to Benefit (ATB) regulation applies to all students who are first-time Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) recipients in the 2006-2007 academic year or thereafter. 

You must fulfill the New York State Ability to Benefit (ATB) requirement if you have not earned at least one (1) of the following:

  • a US high school diploma or a recognized equivalent such as a TASC/GED,
  • a Home School Letter from your school district's superintendent,
  • a previous accredited College Degree, or
  • 24 earned college credits in the core classes as required by the New York State Education Department. Learn more →


How to Fulfill the ATB Requirement

You may fulfill the ATB requirement by taking the appropriate ATB tests and achieving the minimum cut scores as indicated below:

  • Score of 233 in Reading
  • Score of 230 in Arithmetic
  • Score of 235 in Writing

Please note: The exam is conducted in person, be sure to report to the Hunter College Testing Center, Room 150 Hunter North Building.

You must have a valid photo identification to test. For more information about the exam, contact the Testing Center at testing@hunter.cuny.edu.
