Why Dr. Oza Became Involved

··

Rupal Oza, Ph.D., Director of the Women and Gender Studies Program

I am currently the Director of the Women and Gender Studies program at Hunter College, CUNY.  My work focuses on political economic transformations in the global south, the geography of the right-wing politics, and the conjuncture between development and security. The Making of Neoliberal India: Nationalism, Gender, and the Paradoxes of Globalization was my first book published in 2006 by Routledge, New York and by Women Unlimited, India.

I have several articles in peer-reviewed journals and currently working on three projects:  the first examines the mobilizing of particular human rights and feminist discourses against 'Muslim extremism' in an age of terror and empire; second explores security beyond its conventional mooring in law and order to examine its deployment at different scales in south Asia; and the third project examines the link between special economic zones, the discourse of security, and Hindutva politics in Gujarat, India.
