Dr. Bidell & the LGBT Center Awarded a Presidential Grant for a LGBT Certificate at Hunter College
Dr. Bidell was awarded a Presidential Curricular Innovation Grants Proposal- Initiative for Interdisciplinary Minor and Certificate Development to begin work on creating a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Social Science and Public Policy Certificate for Hunter College undergraduate students.
A core mission of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Social Science and Public Policy Center (LGBT Center) at Hunter College is the development of LGBT social science and public policy educational programming for Hunter College students. As such, the Presidential Curricular Innovation Grant provides an opportunity to obtain needed support to advance this initiative.
Our goal is to develop a novel, innovative, and cutting-edge undergraduate certificate that is applied and foundationally based on social science and public policy to understand, influence, and advance social justice and human rights for LGBT people locally, nationally, and internationally. Drawing on both social sciences and public policy to ground such an applied LGBT undergraduate program is both cutting-edge and needed. Of the 11 senior CUNY Colleges, only Brooklyn College has a dedicated and named LGBT/Queer undergraduate minor. Developing a new LGBT certificate at Hunter College creates a needed programmatic addition for students in New York City wishing to include LGBT undergraduate education within their overall course of study.
