Elizabethe Payne named Interim Director

Elizabethe C. Payne, Ph.D., has been appointed Interim Director of the LGBT Social Science and Public Policy Center at Hunter College’s Roosevelt House and is a Visiting Associate Professor at Hunter 2014-2016. She is Founding Director of QuERI – The Queering Education Research Institute©, a research and policy center dedicated to bridging the gap between research and practice in the creation of affirming school environments for LGBTQ students and families. Prior to coming to Hunter College, Dr. Payne was faculty in the Syracuse University School of Education and in the LGBT Studies program from 2005-2014. As a sociologist of education, she specializes in qualitative research methodology, critical theory, youth culture, queer girlhoods, and LGBTQ issues in education. Her current research addresses LGBTQ bullying, education professionals’ experiences with transgender elementary school students, LGBTQ professional development for educators, heteronormativity in sex education, and adolescent lesbian/queer girls’ experiences with the gender binary. Dr. Payne served on the New York State Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) Task Force, the DASA State Policy Group, and the New York State School Professional Certification Committee on Diversity. DASA is the New York State student anti-harassment law which went into effect July, 2012. QuERI moved with Dr. Payne into the Hunter College LGBT Social Science & Public Policy Center at Roosevelt House.
