Diversity Initiative
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
The Language Diversity Initiative is designed to raise
awareness of and appreciation for students' language proficiencies across
the college, stimulate the creation of opportunities for Languages Other
Than English (LOTES) use in a wide variety of courses and departments,
and promote the creation of community service projects and applications
that make Hunter's linguistic resource visible to the larger community.
The fundamental goal is to make our campus one that appreciates LOTE
skills and nurtures their conservation and continued development. It
reflects our commitment to diversity and our desire to help students
prepare for both employment and responsible participation in the civic
life of the "global village."
A dual strategy has been developed to accomplish these
goals.
- LDI sponsors campus wide events to increase awareness of language
diversity on campus: essay contests, a language recognition week,
panels on career opportunities using bilingual skills.
- LDI works closely with faculty to develop model courses and/or
redesign curriculum in a variety of departments so that students’
LOTES are integrated into students’ learning experience.
The Language Diversity is funded by the U.S. Department
of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education
(FIPSE) and co-sponsored by Hunter College's Office of the Provost.
