An ebook for an intermediate German language course

Aine Zimmerman (German)

Project Goals
:
  • Investigate the best ways to include media in the e-book format, and find additional videos, websites and online materials to expand upon my current materials and themes.
  • Learn the technology necessary to create a pilot e-book from my teaching materials.
Technologies Used: iBooks Author, iPads, Bookry, Brainscape, Simple Mind+

"I hypothesize that the multimedia format with easily accessible, up-to-date materials will increase student interest and engagement, as well as encourage independent learning and self-directed practice."

What did you accomplish over the summer?
I learned how to use iBooks Author, and its various widgets, to create two sample chapters of an ebook that contain media such as: videos, hyperlinks, multiple-choice exercises with answers/direct feedback, image galleries, still images taken from various web sources, and interactive modules. I investigated various apps, such a Bookry app for including PDFs in ebooks, Simple Mind+ for creating word webs, and Brainscape for online flashcards and flashcard sharing, for students to use for supported independent learning. I also found additional videos, websites and online materials to expand upon my current materials and themes.

How did your thinking about your project evolve?
With the guidance of my technology advisor, I quickly realized how much of a learning curve there would be with the technological aspects of the project, and so scaled back from thinking I would create an entire e-book, to creating sample chapters that will serve as a template for future chapters.  I am happy to speak to anyone considering this type of project to share my experience and answer questions.
