DIY electronic textbooks

October 31, 2013

How do ebooks make it possible to engage students in new ways? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using an ebook for a class? What is involved in creating your own e-textbook?

In this session, Aine Zimmerman will share sections of an ebook she created for an intermediate German language course, and students from the course will speak about their experiences with the ebook thus far.  Aine will show how the ebook's multimedia formats, such as embedded videos, pdf files, images and quizzes, heighten student interest and encourage independent learning. She will also discuss the potential of the ebook format to more effectively address the varied language levels that come together in these types of intermediate language courses - or any class where there are mixed levels of abilities or knowledge - through self-directed practice.

Shiao-Chuan Kung will brief the audience on some frequently asked questions about e-textbook creation, including:

  • What mobile devices do my students have?
  • What software should I use to create e-textbooks?
  • What file format should I use?
  • How should I share the e-textbook with my students?
