Nelly Gordpour, Muse Scholar, Class of 2016

Tell us about yourself:

I was born in Toronto, Ontario to Persian parents and I graduated from Roslyn High School on Long Island. My art form is photography and during my high school years, I was awarded “Long Island’s Best Young Artist” at the Heckscher Museum of Art and the All County award, and one of my photographs was selected for exhibition at Drexel University's Photography Gallery.

Since I started Hunter in the fall of 2012, I have continued my studies in photography and one of my photographs was recently chosen for publication in Hunter’s literary and art journal, The Olivetree Review.  Outside of school I also work as an events photographer.  This past fall I donated a photograph to Dr. Hooshang Amirahmadi's "Campaign for a Better Iran" for the American–Iranian Council.

How has your scholarship helped you?

As a Muse Scholar, I am able to explore the art world while pursuing my degree in Sociology. I have had the  opportunity to visit many NYC museums and galleries, attend artist lectures and evening performances of theater, dance and music, and much more. Not only have I learned a great deal about art, which has helped me immensely in my own artistic practice, but I have met some incredible people through the program: working artists and professionals in the arts, supportive faculty and advisers, and, of course, my fellow Muse Scholars. The Muse Scholar Program is helping me explore my passions while equipping me with the tools I need to succeed both academically and artistically at Hunter and beyond.
