Community Health Education

The Program in Urban Public Health, accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health since 1972, prepares health educators to plan and manage community health programs to reduce social and behavioral threats to health such as asthma, HIV infection, infant mortality, and violence. Graduates work as managers, administrators, researchers, planners, health educators, environmental and occupational health specialists, public health nutritionists, and community health nurses in diverse locations including health facilities, public and public agencies, businesses, and community organizations locally, nationally and internationally.

Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences

The program is designed for individuals seeking careers as environmental and/or occupational health professionals. While emphasizing the recognition, evaluation and control of environmental and occupational factors affecting health, the curriculum also includes consideration of economic, sociopolitical, and regulatory issues. Offerings are designed so that students may pursue a broad course of study in environmental health science or may specialize in industrial hygiene. Internship opportunities are available with numerous outside organizations as well as research with faculty members. All courses are held in the evening and studies can be pursued on a full or part-time basis.

Epidemiology & Biostatistics

Graduates will have the knowledge and skills to design and conduct population health studies and apply research findings to improve the health of urban populations. The Epidemiology and Biostatistics MPH track consists of 2 specializations: one in Epidemiology and one in Biostatistics. The objectives for students in Epidemiology include being able to: understand the principles, methods, strengths and limitations of epidemiologic study designs; collaborate on applied population health research; interpret epidemiologic findings, effectively communicate research and finding to lay and professional audiences, and apply the findings to the development of evidence-based interventions to improve population health. The objectives for students in Biostatistics include being able to: attain an awareness and basic understanding of advanced statistical methods and to apply core and intermediate level statistical methods to public health endeavors, such as data management, statistical analysis, interpretation, and presentation of analytical results using computing technology in government and private health agencies, industry, and research institutions.

Health Policy Management

Graduates will have the knowledge and skills needed to plan and manage public health programs in a variety of urban settings and across multiple sectors; analyze the impact of policies in the health and others sectors on population health; or advocate for policies that promote the health of urban populations.

Nutrition & Public Health

Nutrition in public health is concerned with the promotion of the nutritional well-being of population groups. An individual without the registered dietitian (RD) credential who earns the Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree in nutrition in public health may be considered a public health professional who specializes in nutrition. The public health professional who specializes in nutrition is generally employed in the administration of community nutrition programs and in work with public and private agencies that provide nutrition and health education An individual with the RD credential who has earned the MPH degree in nutrition in public health may be considered a public health nutritionist. The public health nutritionist is generally employed in the public sector, in local, state, or federal government health departments and in international nutrition programs.

Program Mission, Competencies and Course Objectives

The Hunter College Program in Public Health educates public health professionals to promote health and prevent disease among residents of urban communities. It prepares students to work with the diverse populations living in cities and to serve in a variety of settings in government, nonprofit organizations, businesses and communities. The program provides students with a broad multidisciplinary background in public and urban health and with specific competencies' in environmental and occupational health, nutrition or community health education. Its student's staff and faculty seek to reflect the diversity of New York City.

Portfolio

A portfolio is required of students in order to graduate with the MPH or MS degree. In order to complete the culminating experience, you submit a portfolio that becomes the property of the program. The portfolio assignment requires you to review the general public health competencies and the competencies in your specific field of specialization. You will reflect on how you attained these comperencies through a combination of coursework, fieldwork, employment, community service, and other experiences. You will also evaluate your fieldwork experiences, and identify general and specialization competencies that were enhanced during the fieldwork. The materials in this section will help you develop and maintain the portfolio that is submitted during the capstone seminar (PH 738).
