PROGRAM MISSION:
The Hunter College
Program in Public Health educates public health professionals to promote
health and prevent disease among residents of urban communities. It
prepares students to work with the diverse populations living in cities
and to serve in a variety of settings in government, nonprofit organizations,
businesses and communities. The program provides students with a broad
multidisciplinary background in public and urban health and with specific
competencies' in environmental and occupational health, nutrition
or community health education. Its student's staff and faculty seek
to reflect the diversity of New York City.
The Program prepares
graduate students to work in urban communities as environmental health
specialists, industrial hygienists, public health nutritionists, community
health nurses and community health educators. It also prepares undergraduate
students to be dietitians and health educators who can work with individuals
and communities to prevent and treat health problems facing urban
populations.
The Program is
committed to education, research and service to improve the health
of urban populations, especially disadvantaged communities in New
York City. The Program carries out research and public service projects
that create new understanding of the factors that influence the well-being
of urban populations demonstrates innovative approaches to solving
urban public health problems; and assists policy makers, practitioners,
citizens and others to make informed choices about the health of cities.
Because the Program
believes that health and disease are created within communities, communities
have a key role to play in public health action, research and- education.
Community residents and organizations help the Program to identify
research needs, educate professionals and take action to promote health
and prevent disease.
Urban health is
shaped by multiple stakeholders and so the Program in Public Health
has collaborative relationships with professional organizations, public
agencies, other research universities, social service and health care
institutions, labor unions, community organizations and advocacy groups,
and other units of Hunter College and the City University of New York.
